T.H.R.I.V.E Afterschool Feature Story

As first semester comes to an end, we pause to celebrate all of our afterschool scholars that THRIVE in every aspect of the word: T-Teamwork, H-Health, R-Recreation, I-Innovation, V-Volunteering, and E-Exploration. The members of our afterschool ecosystem work diligently to make a positive difference in the lives of our scholars so that they can achieve globally, contribute locally, and are fulfilled individually. Our afterschool program is staffed by certified teachers and caring mentors who are trained to help young people develop important life skills such as coping with stress and using their voice, as well as leveraging youth interests for connecting programming to school, home, and other settings. Quality programs are tailored to meet scholars’ academic, physical, and social emotional needs.

Featured here are afterschool students at Johnson/Pecan Park Elementary under the leadership of Dr. LaConda Arnold (afterschool coordinator.) A special kudos to Ms. Katherine Smith (teacher assistant) who is pictured reviewing test prep sight words with scholars in preparation for 2nd term benchmark assessments.

Students reviewing for benchmark assessments

Students were asked to say the word, spell the word, and then say the word again. This is to help them better grasp a full understanding of high frequency words.  Additionally, students were challenged to tell how that word is used in an academic setting. For example, one word was multiplication. They were to say the word, spell the word, and provide an example of multiplication with the answer.  Students were given multiple words such as antonym, theme, contrast, division, divisor, addition, subtraction, main idea, infer, etc.

This technique is a great way to review and reiterate skills, concepts, and strategies taught during the school day. Knowledge and application of vocabulary are ESSENTIAL to understand HOW to solve problems, as well as to understand what the problem asks.

Thank you, Johnson/Pecan Park, for making learning ENGAGING and MEANINGFUL so that students THRIVE.
