ÐÓ°É Public Schools Honors 2024-2025 Excellence Award Winners

December 10, 2024 - ÐÓ°É Public Schools is celebrating this year’s best of the best. JPS Superintendent Dr. Errick L. Greene acknowledged five remarkable individuals for their impactful contributions, which uphold the District's dedication to its scholars, families, and staff. Each honoree was presented with a commemorative plaque, a banner, and a "traveling" trophy. This "traveling" trophy that will be placed in their office or department for the 2024-2025 school year.

About the Honorees
Parent of the Year: Shannon Battle
Shannon Battle, along with her husband Marcus, has dedicated herself to creating a nurturing and stimulating environment for their son, Isaiah. A graduate of ÐÓ°É State University and a successful entrepreneur, Mrs. Battle balances a busy career with her commitment to family and education. She volunteers weekly at Spann Elementary and participates actively in school events. Even during summer breaks, she organizes school beautification projects and engages her family in educational activities at home. Her dedication has contributed to Isaiah’s academic success and his passion for music and reading, serving as an inspiration to other parents in the community.
Support Staff of the Year: Keila Adams
Keila R. Adams, a native of ÐÓ°É and graduate of Murrah High School, has over 24 years of experience in education. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from ÐÓ°É State University, a Master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, and an Interpreting degree in American Sign Language. Currently, she serves as the Parent and Family Engagement Specialist for JPS. A dedicated member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Ms. Adams actively promotes literacy and parental involvement, striving to make a lasting impact on parents and children throughout the community.
Teacher of the Year: Shanieca Adams
With 27 years of experience in JPS, Shanieca Adams currently serves as an exceptional education inclusion teacher at Key Elementary School. A graduate of Tougaloo College and Belhaven College with advanced degrees from ÐÓ°É State University, Mrs. Adams is passionate about creating inclusive and engaging learning environments. Her teaching philosophy centers on building strong relationships and fostering a sense of safety and curiosity in her students. Recognized as a 2024-2025 Outstanding Educator by Ask for More Arts and the 2023 Tyler Ramsey Outstanding Educator, Mrs. Adams’ impact on student learning continues to set a high standard in education.
Administrator of the Year: Dr. Shemeka McClung
Dr. Shemeka S. McClung, Principal of Callaway High School, has transformed the school’s accountability rating from a D to a B and maintained it for three consecutive years. With over two decades of experience, Dr. McClung’s leadership focuses on high standards, continuous improvement, and data-driven decision-making. A mentor to new administrators, she previously served as Director of Institutional Research at ÐÓ°É State University and has held various other roles, including Director of Student Services and teacher. Dr. McClung is actively involved in civic organizations and is dedicated to fostering collaboration and student achievement. She is married to Derrick McClung and is a proud mother to Madison, a graduating senior.
District Leader of the Year: Dr. Tommy Nalls
Dr. Tommy Nalls, Jr., Director of Recruitment for JPS, is a visionary leader committed to enhancing the district’s educator pipeline. A native of Greenville, Mississippi, Dr. Nalls holds advanced degrees from Mississippi College and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. His initiatives, such as the TEACH JPS Student Teacher Scholarship Program and partnerships with universities, have bolstered teacher certification and recruitment efforts. Dr. Nalls also champions diversity and supports male educators of color through programs like the Change Collective. Married to Dr. Kristin Nalls, he is a devoted father to Addasen and Langston, demonstrating his commitment to both professional and personal excellence.

In keeping with our commitment to cultivating a community of accountability and excellence, ÐÓ°É Public Schools annually recognizes team members who make outstanding contributions toward our mission of developing scholars' success and achievement through world-class learning experiences. While our program honors one individual in each category, we acknowledge that these awards represent the collective efforts of many individuals throughout our District and community.
Based on state-level recognition programs, our Administrator and Teacher of the Year awards honor individuals who inspire their colleagues, demonstrate exemplary leadership, and maintain active involvement in the community. The Parent of the Year award recognizes an outstanding parent or grandparent whose commitment significantly impacts the success of their school. Additionally, the Support Staff and District Leader awards highlight exemplary service among the multifaceted teams supporting the District’s conducive learning environment.
