Scholars in New JPS Program Spend Summer Learning Skills to Combat Teacher Shortage

High school scholars in Ӱ Public Schools are making history as the first cohort of Ӱ Middle College (JMC).

Ӱ Middle College, in collaboration with Ӱ State University, was created by JPS to form highly motivated, nationally acclaimed, dedicated educators to combat the teacher shortage in Ӱ.

Scholars participated in the Southern Initiative Algebra Project (SIAP). It began in 1994 as a program of Algebra Project, Inc.  From 1994 to 2002, SIAP developed 42 Algebra Project sites in eight states involving over 4,000 teachers and 50,000 students in whole school mathematics education reform with the goal of having every student succeed in algebra by the end of the 8th grade.

During the month of June 2024, scholars participated in several activities inside the College of Education and Human Development on the campus of JSU.

One of those experiences included tutoring GED students from the greater Ӱ area in math.  

“It’s an amazing collaboration. It’s giving our middle college students experience with one on one tutoring,” said Math Instructor, Stephanie Baxter. “They are actually working to help build up people from our community who need help. JMC students are helping to prepare them for their GED.”

It was a surreal moment for Charles Travis, who joined the program because of his love for education.

“Honestly, it’s a great experience to be able to be with my peers to become math teachers in Ӱ Public Schools,” said JMC scholar, Charles Travis.

And the people who received help to prepare for their test were grateful for the support.

"It's worth it," Gariontate Harrinton said, "I had a good experience."

"I really enjoyed it, and appreciated the help," Jamela Grace added. "They were really patient, and I wish they could continue to do more work with us."
