Robotics Team at McWillie Elementary Wins First Place in Computer Science Competition

March 18, 2024 - Scholars at McWillie Elementary School won first place in the Computer Science Wonder Coding Robotic Competition on March 8, 2024, at the Mississippi Children’s Museum.

Congratulations to Henry Goodwin, Eleanor McGuffey, Kelly Cloyd, Roman Farris and their facilitator, Mrs. Sara Burris, for an amazing first place victory!

"I am so excited for our McWillie Robotics Team and their coach, Mrs. Sara Burris," said McWillie Elementary School Principal Dr. Sara Harper. "Mrs. Burris and the students stayed after school every week to practice.  What they have learned during this experience has benefited them not only by receiving the first-place prize but also, for a future in technology."

Students had to work in teams to build robots, code the robots, and then put them to the test of different obstacles.

A total of 16 teams from all over the state competed.

There were three different robot builds and students could only have two attempts at each task.

Students problem-solved, collaborated, and exhibited strategies to successfully complete all three tasks.

The team practiced once a week after school to prepare for the competition and their hard work paid off in the end.
