Overview

  • A 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) is a school-based community education center that keeps children safe during at-risk afterschool hours, on some Sundays, and often in summer. These centers provide children academic enrichment, homework tutors, and a wide range of cultural, developmental, and recreational opportunities. Students also receive afternoon snacks and transportation home.

Each afterschool center has a program coordinator who directs the operation of the center on consultation with the principal and local school advisory group including parents, community representatives, and collaborators. There is a district level Advisory Council, which evaluates the overall network of 21st Century Community Learning Centers in coordination with district administrators.

The 21st Century program is directed at the district level through the JPS Office of State and Federal Programs. Funding for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers is awarded on a competitive basis by the Mississippi Department of Education.
